While many of the riots were violent and spontaneously planned, the uprising led to reforms and global awareness of human rights for the LGBTQ community. In response, patrons rioted against the intrusion, and the resulting protests went down in history as the Stonewall Riots. The Greenwich Village establishment catered to a largely gay community and as a result was raided by police on the morning of June 28.
